Critics can make the argument about literature depicting contentious social issues such as political, immigration; strife or even globalization should be classified as "activism" rather than "art" itself. Authors say that their work is "art" and "activism", but would acknowledge the fact that they are making a direct and specific critique of certain societal "institutions" as they prepare fiction about life. These may be critiques of literal institutions - state and schools, public offices, etc. or "cultural" institutions that are more metaphoric, and reflect people's practices, i.e. "the institution or marriage", the "cultural norm" of people deciding to live together in "ethnic" communities
