Critical Review - Dickinson

1. You are to research and write about Emily Dickinson this week.

2. Reread his or her assigned poems in your Norton Anthology textbook. (Attached)

3. Using your library resources (as detailed on the Library & Learning Resource Centerpage in the Course Materials section of this course), research a minimum of 3 to 5 academic sources that contain relevant and detailed information about your chosen poet. (Need help? Check with your instructor or the librarian. Contact information is listed on the Library & Learning Resource Centerpage.)

4. In a 3 page double-spaced essay, highlight one or two of the main characteristics of your chosen poet and his/her work. Strike a balance between stating your own insights, based on the poems you read, and the information you found when you researched your chosen poet.

5. As always, your summary will be graded based on the Writing Summary Criteriaincluded in the Course Materials. If you are feeling "rusty" in your summary writing after two weeks of other written work, you may want to briefly review the expectations before you complete your assignment for this week.

Writing Summary Criteria

Summaries are conventional essays, which you will write regularly in relation to written assignments and questions about your reading. They should be made up of an introduction, a body paragraph (or several, if necessary), and a conclusion. A good length to aim for is 2 double-spaced pages in 12 point font.

The following criteria will be used to evaluate written summaries of the various readings. Summaries will be evaluated holistically.

• Displays a clear and in-depth understanding of main points of the reading.
• Demonstrates professional language and writing style.
• Uses proper grammar and spelling.
