Objective: To increase awareness about legal rights of nursing home residents and the role of ombudsman

Research:
Over 3.2 million adults live in nursing homes and other long term care facilities in the U.S. As many as 40 percent of all adults will enter a nursing home at some point during their lives and as the U.S. population ages, the number of nursing home residents is expected to grow. Many of these elders are well-cared for but many may be the victims of abuse. There are laws and regulations taken place to protect the civil rights of nursing home residents.

Look for websites and scholarly articles to gather information on following questions:

  1. What are rights granted by federal law to nursing home residents? Provide the title of the law and write general descriptions of the rights included in this law.
  2. Who are long-term care ombudsmen (LTCO) and what is their role?
  3. What are the resources (organization's webpage, hotline number etc.) when you suspect violation of nursing home resident's rights?

Create a slide:
Based on your research, make a presentation slide that includes the answers to ALL of the three questions. The presentation is intended for older adults and their families who are not living in nursing homes, but plan to in the near future.

  1. Submit a PowerPoint file. The slide should be no longer than 5 slide pages including the reference page. Make sure each answer is distinguishable. This slide is to be presented to older adults so don't fill the slide with too small fonts. Recommended format: PowerPoint, Google slide or PDF.
  2. Reference information should be included in the document as APA style. Question number 3 can be just the list of websites or phone numbers.
