Is Sammy a likable, sympathetic character? Why or why not?

Sammy's heroism is flawed, as is true of most modern protagonists, but it is present. He is offended by the treatment the girls receive. Granted, his offense is in direct proportion of his attraction, but there is validity to it. Sammy makes judgments about all the customers at the store, but he does not stoop to insult any of them. He treats them all the same, and expects his manager to. However, as a well-raised young man, Sammy would not consider challenging authority. The girls provide a change. Sammy finds in them the impetus he needs to challenge society, challenge authority. Although readers can argue he only wants the girls attention, it is important to note that the girls ignore him. Sammy knows that they are ignoring him, but he still walks out. He does not try to talk his way out of the situation, he does not allow Lengel to convince him to stay. Sammy, having been given the opportunity, now wants to see it through. That is heroic, the convinction to beliefs that he shows as protagonists, especially when coupled with his epiphany of "how hard the world was going to be to me hereafter''.

Is Sammy a likable, sympathetic character? Why or why not?

Sammy too much extent is able to gain the attention of young readers like me as Sammy is a teenage boy with all the attributes similar to the youngsters. In the story, he seems to be fascinated to the 'queen' by her elegance and grace. He could stand up against the owners in her favor whether or not she noticed it. He seems to be guided by impulse and take a sudden decision not anticipating the result. He lives with his family and depends on them for small chores. He seems to differentiate women based on their looks rather than their core intelligence. He has got the brain to be a cashier at the supermarket and quite amazingly describes every minute details happening around him. In the end, he seems to be regretting his decision to 'quit' while acting heroically in front of her 'queen' who didn't even notice him. All the plot and the development of the story cannot arouse extreme hatred for Sammy in the reader's mind but also cannot gain the profound sympathy of the readers as all of his decision are unthoughtful and spontaneous. Sammy is a character to give a lesson to the youngster for not to act by impulse instead with logical thinking. He is a representation of how young boy objectify women based on their looks which should be changed with awareness. To be particular, Sammy couldn't gain my personal sympathy.
