Why Should I Move Onto ESL 273?

I'm now w?s =developed to use convincing examples and facts to support and explain my main idea. Moreover, I have confidence in my ability about the integration of information. I collect materials related to my main point and then sort them out, gather the essential ones and use them with facility. For instance, in the out-class writing, "Don't Be Afraid to Make Mistakes"; in order to show that mistakes help us to achieve the success, I used the survey from Chemistry book and I also quoted the successful entrepreneurial example. So with solid foundation and convincing facts, I was persuasive and can always make my point strong. I guess that's one of my strongest strengths.

Besides the strength, there's also something shortages. I found it easy to conclude based on title. But when I took the whole content into consideration, I felt difficult in making conclusion. Like the first two times in writing, I made my conclusion just based on title, there is no link to the paragraphs, the pale conclusion looked less consistent and even unreasonable. Gradually I realized what caused this. I was kind of creative and I wanted to modify my expression until it gleamed with perfection. This was not bad, but when it came to summary, the more information I got, the harder I felt to summarize. So I managed to conclude each paragraph step by step, eliminated the insignificant parts then I got my concise main idea. And after professor Lee's teaching, now I make great progress and believe this can be overcome and even becomes my merits in the near future when I take ESL 273 course.

During this quarter, I learned to use appropriate topic sentence. The topic sentence is usually at the beginning of a paragraph. It indicates the author's main idea and grasps the attention of the reader. I used to ignore its importance. However, at the beginning of this quarter, we did some practices and then used it in our writing. Like in my in-class writing "My Lazy Sister", I have used one topic sentence for each paragraph as the topic sentence, like "My sister is a clever and beautiful girl, but she has an unknown shortcoming-laziness." These exercises were very helpful and inspiring. Not only did I acquire many delicate topic sentences, I also realized that a clearly topic sentence is so essential. It did better to the whole structure of my passage.

Don't Be Afraid to Make Mistakes

Even Homer sometimes nods, much less we are ordinary people, and we can get ahead from mistakes. As we all known, invitation is very hard.Franklin has carried out hundreds of experiments on electricity and invented the lightning rod. During the experiments, he failed many times, even got electric shocks; but he never gave up and learned from them. Therefore, he achieved success in the end and his invention protected millions of buildings from lightning until today. Another example is about Michael Phelps, who is the most decorated Olympian in the history. However, In February 2009, a newspaper reported he smoked marijuana. He apologized and promised never do this again. After that, he proved his commitment with concrete action. When I know these stories, I learn from them. I have an Accounting 1B class in this quarter, and my teacher always give us so many tests, each week have a quiz, midterm1, 2, 3 and the final. Though I hate them but I know they will help me. Quizzes usually difficult and I get low score because there are so many questions I haven't ever seen. Thus, I can get high score in the midterm that because I find my mistakes and fix them through each quizzes, then I won't make them next time. Make mistakes is not a big deal, if we could learn from them, and won't make the same mistakes again.

Not only personal but also company can achieve success from mistakes. In 1891, a 29 years old man came to Chicago with 32 dollars, he had no money and any skills, but he wanted to start his own business. At first, he sold soap. Then, he found baking powder was more sell well. He thought he would be rich, so he hazarded all his savings in this investment. However, there were so many baking powder sellers; he was no match for them. At the moment, he had no other idea, and started a large promotion. When customer bought a can of baking powder, he could get two packages of chewing gum. Unexpectedly, this promotion achieved a great success, andthe man found a big opportunity form it. From then on, he started his gum business. The smart man is William Wrigley Jr. and he had successfully created his own Wrigley Company through so many failures. There is this idiom says that "Failure is the mother of success". People should not be scared to make mistake because making mistakes is just an experience that a person has to go through before they reach their goal.
