PARAGRAPH ASSIGNMENT

The following questions are designed to help you connect a short story's form with its meaning. Choose one of the questions and one short story from the textbook, and write a focused, developed paragraph (about one page) that responds to the question and explains how the literary device (in italics) contributes to the meaning of the story.

6. Are there any symbols in the work? How does the symbolism in the story help us understand its meaning on more than one level?

7. If there is irony in the story, how does it affect our understanding? Is the theme ambiguous because of the irony? Explain how the irony functions in the story.
