Issues of A Normal Brain Development in Children

The term "a normal brain development" can bedefined and measured in various ways, but the most common definition has often been describe as a miraculous and transformative brain machinethatwould allow a child to develop the abilities to crawl, speak, eat, laugh and walk. A healthy development of a child's brain is built on the little parts that parents and caregivers experience as they interact with a child.Current research, however, has limited the use of the term to describe as"a complexand dynamic process for which detailed scientific informationis lacking" (Reiss et al., 1996, p. 1763). This means that the information is so limited to see what is really inside this unique brain of a child, and that researchers will also need to get a large sample of a children population in order to get better and accurate resultsin this finding.

In the beginning of the study, researchers have stated, "because of the scarcity of normal quantitative pediatricneuroimaging data, fundamental questions concerning cerebral development during early childhood remain unanswered at present"(Reiss et al., 1996, p.1763). As stated in the quote, it was a fact that information was inadequate in this field of study.

There might be a problem in the study becausethe definition of normal brain development was still defined very poorly as the researchers were studying whether a normal brain development was really related to gender and IQfor boys and girls. As the researchers in Reiss et al, 1996) stated that"thereare relatively few imaging reports describing quantitative in vivo brain development in a large sample of normal,  non-clinically referred children."(Reiss et al., 1996.). The researcherswould find little information about whether normal brain development is related to intelligent and ages between boys and girls. Even though therewas much information to investigateabout normal brain development, whether it was related to age, gender or intelligence, the researchers need more evidence. These behaviors would prove that with little information between normal brain development and the other factors that are mentioned above, the researcherscould not calculate that the normal brain development and the other factors are related. Boys and girls might think and behavior differently, age might also not a factor as the brain develops, or perhaps normal brain development was not the result from IQ.  These factors might not be a cause that was related to a young child's brain development.

Another limitation of the study is although this study was conducted with a predominantly non-clinical group, potential biases resulting from recruitment strategies utilizing school and newspaper announcements, and siblings of children with genetic disorders, cannot be ruled out. Accordingly, conclusions regarding normal brain development in children must be considered provisional until confirmed by investigation of a more random sample of children from normal population. Similarly, although the cerebral parcellation procedure used in this study presents clear advantages over the analysis of total or hemispheric cerebral volumes only, the definitions for the cerebral regions of interest are relatively gross and subject to effects resulting in brain shape across subjects. Accordingly, studies utilizing finer, more functionally precise regions of interest  are needed to build upon the results presented here.

The causes of normal brain development could be difficult to judge if there was unclear definitions and information. According to Reiss et al (1996), the researchers described, "because of the scarcity of normal quantitative paediatricneuroimaging data, fundamental questions concerning cerebral development during early childhood remain unanswered at present." (Reiss et al, 1996, p 1743).Scientist should find more ways to investigate the findings. Therefore, researchers should gather a large sample of children in a study to see whether the age, gender and IQ is the real cause to a normal brain development between boys and girls by using sophisticated modern brain imaging techniques. Researchers should also do more studies to understand how a normal brain developmentwould influence the gender, age, and IQ of a child when using the modern brain imaging techniques and whether it resulted to a normal brain development in boys and girls.

In addition, the researchers would also need to study more about the relationship between the modern brain imagingand a normal brain developmentto determine whether a change to a child's age, gender and IQ is. In their studies, their researches have showed thatbrain begins to develop and organize as early as five years of age, but it can "decline in cortical grey volume in normal children as young as five years old" (Reiss et al, 1996, p.1770).However, the researchers cannot any proofs to tell that there is a development in the brain in both genders between five and seventeen year old.It is important for the researchers to know about the various types of genders when they study the brain development related to early childhood.

In conclusion, even though the study shows that brain development  is related to early childhood, researchers must do further research to get accurate findings in order to determine if brain development is related to early childhood. However, this studydoes provide some accurate findings between brain development and early childhood for boys and girls.
