Breadcrumb - Policy Practitioner Skills

Effective social workers need to engage in policy practice. The NASW Code of Ethics - Standards provide guidance on the responsibility of social workers to " promote the general welfare of society" (NASW, Code of Ethics Standard 6). This course was designed to give you a hands on approach to learning the policy-making process. While it is not expected that you have perfected the skills to be a lobbyist or legislative aid, it is hoped you have an awareness of the legislative process that ultimately can define your primary practice behaviors as social workers.

Below are some policy practice skills that you may have used in the course, or you observed others using while participating in the policy-making process at the Georgia state capitol. General policy practice skills include:

Conducting data searches
Researching problem issues
Interviewing skills
Networking skills
Listening skills
Writing skills
Oral communication skills
Value clarification assessment (determining the ethical merits of a policy or political process)

The art of persuasion
Negotiation/collaboration skills
Skills in political strategy
Conceptualizing policy implementation plans
Conceptualizing policy evaluation plans

your selection of two policy practice skills that you discovered to be your strength (actual or emerging) during the semester. Explain why you believe it is a strength for you. Secondly, select one skill that you believe you need further growth or improvement.

Explain why you believe it is necessary you develop the skill and what effect it could have on your work as a social worker.
