#1 The Parthenon, created by the Greeks in 447-432 BCE, is a great example of how balance and proportion were used in architecture. The slight details in column size and step placement are what truly ties each structure together, yet these carefully calculated proportions are easily overlooked. The Greek ideals of balance and proportion have continued into today's blueprints of many different types of structures, including sports stadiums.

From circuses to amphitheaters, the evolution of Greek stadiums has evolved dramatically. In Washington D.C., one would see many examples of Greek-influenced forms of architecture. One that stood out to me, in particular, was The Capitol Building. The Capitol has the distinctly Greek and Roman Doric order columns in the front, which is the same as the Lincoln Memorial and is the strongest of all orders.

Characteristics of this Greek detail include simplicity, a stouter look, and a base-less bottom, three contrasting qualities when compared to the Ionic or Corinthian orders. My example of The Capitol Building illustrates the classical architecture, which goes in hand with classical themes. The importance of the columns is to express permanence, confidence, and continuity with the past.

#2 In the picture of the Irish House of Parliament, we can clearly see the influence of the Greeks sense of proportion in their architecture. Notice the columns. In architectural terms, these are called Ionic columns, and they are Greek inspired. Ancient Greek architects strove for balance, symmetry, and proportion.

You can find examples of ancient Greek inspired architecture not only in Europe, where the Parliament of Ireland is located, but in America as well. Anyone who has taken a trip to Washington D.C can definitely feel the vibes of Greece. The influence is surrounding you almost everywhere you look. From federal buildings, to universities, and even to some public parks, there is no doubt you have witnessed at least one area adopting the style. Let us not also forget their importance in art.

I myself have seen a lot of musicians take to the Greeks for inspiration, and then proceed to use what they've gathered on their album cover. The cover is then placed on social media for the world to see, and everybody is the reminded of how beautiful the art was back then, even if they do not know it's origins.
