Assignment

Your task is to find the most suitable reactor for the situation posed.

NOTE: I will not accept chicken scratch on a piece of paper, nor will I accept anything photographed and emailed. Your assignment should be a well- presented piece of work, using MS Word (or equivalent) with appropriate layout and format. As an initial suggestion, utilize the format that you use for submission of lab reports.

I expect, as a bare minimum, the following:

1. Consistent font - Arial, 12 point font

2. Consistent line spacing - 1.5 line spacing throughout - makes it easy for me to add comments as and when required

3. Minimal spelling, punctuation and grammar errors

4. Referenced material (if applicable) - use the appropriate format as suggested by the University of Huddersfield

5. Title Page with the assignment, your name, student ID, date, and course title.

6. All equations presented using MS Equation editor or equivalent

7. All equations must be introduced with explanations

8. All equations must show substitutions to properly resemble the calculations and the final results

9. All tabulated results introduced with a sample calculation (if required)

There is no need for a table of contents or list of variables (nomenclature or notation).

Rubric (marking scheme)

10% - Are calculations explained before being performed? 10% - Spelling, punctuation and grammar correct?
70% - Calculations - Proper use of formulas with units, demonstration of all calculations to lead to conclusions
10% - Final answers correct

For the assignment question, (last digit ID) refers to the last digit of your student ID.

The company you work for makes a product, GREATSTUFF (G). To make G, reactants NEEDED (N) and ALSO (A) are used. Therefore, G, is made by the following reaction (1):

N + A →k1 G    (1)

This reaction is as per the reaction expression in equation (2), r1:

r1 = lastdigit ID C1NC2A   (2)

Unfortunately, whenever N is combined with A, something that is not needed, HORRID (H), is produced as per reaction (3):

N + A → k2 H   (3)

The second reaction, equation (3), follows the expression, as shown in equation (4), r2:

r2 = lastdigit ID)CN0.5CA3    (4)

Part A of your assignment:

Based on the expressions above, provide a qualitative assessment of the reactions. From this assessment, provide the ideal conditions for the formation of G.

This is where you evaluate everything based on the RULES discussed in class.

Part B of your assignment:

Quantitatively, N and A reactants are introduced into a vessel via 2 separate streams (i.e. two separate pipes connected to the tank). Each stream, before they enter the reactor, has a concentration of 1200 kmol m-3 h-1.

With the current process, I can only achieve an 80% conversion of the N to get the G.

Evaluate quantitatively to determine which reactor, plug flow or perfectly mixed, that would provide the greatest concentration of G.

Bonus Points

How would you add the A reactant to the reaction to increase the formation of G?

Provide a quantitative assessment to provide a justification for your answer.

THIS IS WORTH AN ADDITIONAL 20% FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT.
