You should to respond to one of the pieces from our unit on the Catholic Intellectual Tradition. How can you use this to guide the ethics of your own life as you grow into a community leader?

Pick three on which to respond

In a response paper, you are to explore your initial reactions to a piece. Carefully read it and consider what you think of or how you feel about the piece.

• How do you feel about what you are reading?
• What do you agree or disagree with?
• Can you identify with the piece? If so, how? If not, why not?
• How do you evaluate the piece in terms of ethics? (What three criteria will you use in your thesis statement and in the development of the paper?)

Some helpful transitions that you may use in the paper are in addition, for example, moreover, however, consequently, finally, and in conclusion.

Organizing Your Response Paper

• The introduction should give the title and author. Then, summarize the piece. End with an explicit thesis statement that either agrees or disagrees with the piece. Make sure to use three criteria.

• Then, develop three body sections based on your thesis statement. Each point from the thesis should serve as part of your topic sentence for each section of the body.

• Then, add your rebuttal section. This is from the classical Aristotelian form. It is a section where you address and counter your opposition. Let's say you agree with the piece. In this section you would address those who may not agree with it. You refute their findings and bring the paper back on track to your original argument. Or let's say you disagree with the piece. Again, this is where you address your counter's opinions, refute them, and bring the essay back on track.

• Finally, conclude the piece. Here, you need to add closure and wrap up the essay. Please look at the strategies from the Behrens's chapter posted on Isidore for ideas on how to write effective introductions, conclusions, and theses statements. Two of the methods I prefer to use are speculation on new ideas and calls for further research.

This paper is to use MLA conventions: double spaced, running header with your surname and page number in top right corner, and heading in top left corner: your name, class/section, instructor, and date European style. Please also give your paper a title, centered on the first page before you begin writing.

Summarize, quote, or paraphrase the piece that you are responding to a minimum of five times, once in the summary in the intro, once per body section, and once in the rebuttal of the paper. Please use MLA conventions for these. You may use either in-text citations or the block method (when it hits your fifth line of text) for quotes.

You must also include a Work Cited List.
