Assignment

Writing Context:

You have completed this week's reading and viewing, and you have an introductory understanding of the requirements for the Argument Essay Rough Draft.

Writing Directions:

Word count is not as important for this initial discussion post as following the instructions is. This post is designed to assist you in prewriting and organizing your thoughts for your argument essay. Number each step and provide your responses directly after each number, labeled as shown below. Compose an initial post regarding the following prompt:

1. Identify whether you support, refute, or complicate the claim in the assignment prompt. To support the claim would mean that you agree with it. To refute the claim would mean that you are adamantly opposed to it. To complicate the claim would mean that you are conditionally in favor of it.

2. Be sure that you have three reasons to support your claim. They should each be strong enough to support a 6-8 sentence body paragraph.

3. State your thesis statement, formatted as shown in the course materials. (A simple formula to follow is: The main idea is A because 1, 2, and 3. Another formula is: Even though A, the main idea is B because 1, 2, and 3.)

4. Locate one quote, summary, or paraphrase to support each of the three reasons. You may use the article, the videos listed, or other credible sources you have evaluated carefully. (Be sure to use the MEAL plan when creating your paragraphs in the rough draft).

5. Offer a preliminary ending for your conclusion, such as a question, prediction, or call to action.

The prompt is "In an argumentative essay, support, refute, or complicate the claim that the surveillance of consumers by retail anthropologists is manipulative and unethical."

In your responses to at least two other students' initial posts, comment regarding the other students' argumentative ideas and structure and offer any positively-phrased constructive criticism that you find appropriate. Feel free to quote a small portion (1-3 sentences) of the student's post and comment on that. You are welcome to address external sources, as long as they are credible, and you must cite them as per MLA formatting. It is also a good idea to ask your fellow students questions to lead to further communication on the discussion boards.

Responses to at least two other students' initial posts should be approximately 150 words.

Nicole Response Prewriting Argumentative Essay

1. I complicate the claim that the surveillance of consumers by retail anthropologists is manipulative and unethical.

I am in favor of it for reasons for myself as the consumer and companies alike.

2. Three reasons I believe this is helpful for consumers and businesses are:

1. Customer needs. My needs. If we are being monitored for the products we purchase most then I know it is most likely going to be in that store that I go to.

2. Product location and set up in the store. My busy schedule means my time is limited and I want to be able to find what I need and get out.

3. Company profit. If this technique helps a company profit by selling what we are most interested in buying then I don't see any issue with it.

3. My thesis statement is: The surveillance and monitoring of consumers in retail can be beneficial to the customer needs, a more efficient layout of the store, and also beneficial for company profit as well.

4. In the story video of "The Science of Shopping," it explained how twenty five years ago there were no technology of monitoring consumers like today. It has increased the effectiveness by filming and talking to customers about their shopping experience.

In the story, "Ted x Talks," Ray Burke talks about how our actions show what we desire. It also discusses how it shows the efficacy of the store as well.

5. My conclusion is that if the consumers shopping experience can be enhanced or made easier then the surveillance of consumers by retail anthropologists is beneficial.

Natasha Response Prewriting Argumentative Essay

1. I support the claim that that the surveillance of consumers by retail anthropologists is manipulative and unethical.
2. My three reasons on why I support this claim are:

1. Customers Satisfaction - Customers will be able to purchase products that they want/desire and not leave empty handed.

2. Location of Items - The location of certain items will catch the attention of the shoppers and get them to enter the store, and purchase things whether they tended to in the first place or not.

3. Companies Earnings will Increase - With being able to provide customers with good merchandise that people want and will buy, the earnings of the companies will go up.

3. Thesis Statement: Placing surveillance within the stores will benefit the companies by knowing where to place certain items, have the customers satisfied, and have the earnings increase.

4. Three examples/quotes to assist my three reasons: "..but to make sellers conform to the desires of shoppers." "..that the reason the Gap and Banana Republic, have tables is not merely that sweaters and shirts look better there, or that tables fit into the warm and relaxing residential feeling that the Gap and Banana Republic are trying to create in their stores, but that tables invite-indeed, symbolize-touching." "...have become valuable guides to store managers looking for the best ways to move the goods."

5. Conclusion: With the surveillance of consumers, companies will able to gather the information they need, so that they can continue to satisfied customers with the products they need. Additionally, companies will be able to expand around the world and have individuals interested which leads to the company to increase their profit.
