Assignment

Welcome to your take-home midterm exam. You will complete 10 identifications and one essay that must include FIVE paragraphs. KEEP IN MIND - yes you can use your notes and textbook, but you MUST put things in your OWN words - otherwise it will be counted as plagiarism.

Part I - Identifications:

Select 10 identifications from the terms listed below to write about who they are, what they did, when they lived, and WHY they are important. These should be at least four to five sentences for each identification and should be separate from your essay.

Andrew Jackson Andrew Johnson Ulysses S. Grant Monroe Doctrine
Trail of Tears Harriet Tubman Mexican American War
John Brown Bleeding Kansas Battle of Bull Run
Frederick Douglass Kansas-Nebraska Act Battle of Gettysburg
Sojourner Truth Manifest Destiny Battle of Vicksburg
Reconstruction Amendments

Part II - Essay:

Consider the following question. Create an introduction, thesis, and supporting details for this essay. A compressive essay MUST include at least four body paragraphs that have a clearly defined thesis and well supported arguments - complete with defined examples. You should have a fifth paragraph that is a closing paragraph in which you make sure to state the legacy of the war and Reconstruction. All elements must be present in order to receive full credit for this essay.

"From the Revolution to the Civil War, Americans are consistently asking questions related to ideas of liberty and grappling with issues related to state and/or national governing practices. Along these lines, we have the issue of slavery. Over time, the push for abolition becomes stronger for those in the north, while southerners continue to argue in favor of this "peculiar institution." Why do you think that the push for abolition becomes more pervasive in the north? In reviewing the issues related to expansion and the ideas of popular sovereignty was the Civil War inevitable? Why or why not" Ultimately, what do you think is the legacy of the war and Reconstruction on our nation?" Please provide several well-defined examples to fully support your argument.
