The song: Autumn Leaves by The Bill Evans Trio (6:00)

You can hear it on youtube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-Z8KuwI7Gc

Format: One page typewritten, double-spaced. Please use a 12pt font.

Place your name - LA#4 - today's date (on the upper left hand corner of the paper). Do not include the name of the song anywhere in the header or above the body of the paper.

Example: John or Mary Student - LA#4 - 4/10/18 - all on one line please!

Listening assignments are opinion papers. You will point out several objective points in the music, i.e. tonal color, dynamics, texture, etc., describe them, and then give your detailed (subjective) opinions of them.

Autumn Leaves consists of a jazz trio containing an acoustic piano, string bass, and drums.

How to approach your written paper for Autumn Leaves:

Listen to Autumn Leaves by Bill Evans on p.185 in our textbook and discuss in a one page paper what it is that you like or do not like about the piece. Read the listening guide and see if you can follow what happens by the using the timing on YouTube. Do not copy anything from our textbook or any other source. Just listen to the piece several times and write what you think (your opinion) and nothing else! Again, this is not a research paper. Some points to focus on are: The introduction, the head (melody), the form (AABA), both the first and second bass solos, the piano solo, the final head (melody), and lastly the coda (the ending section).

Would you listen to this song again after completing this assignment? Why or why not?

Note: Listening Assignments are not research papers. Please do not include any of the following:

- biographies of the musicians

- how successful the musicians are or how many records they sold

- a history of the song and/or the musicians

- any comparisons to any other song even if it is by the same artist.
