Read the two documents labeled "The Niagra Movement Speech" and "The Atlanta Compromise Speech." Once you have read both, type up short answer responses to each of the questions posed (subquestions are posed to help jump-start your thought process). At least 4 sentences per main question (those labeled by numbers), although more is always best. Be sure to use the speeches provided as well as the other websites I have provided below to support your answers.

1. What are each of the author's asking for in their speeches?

a. What does it seem Booker T. Washington wants for the Black American race?
b. What does it seem W.E.B wants for the Black American race?

2. How do each of the authors propose to get the things that they request of U.S. society, particularly in the South?

a. How does Washington seek to gain change for Black Americans? What are the pros and cons of his stance?
b. How does DuBois seek to gain change for Black Americans? What are the pros and cons of his stance?

3. How does Booker T. Washington seem to respond to discrimination practiced by Southern whites and how does W.E.B. DuBois seem to respond to discrimination practiced by whites?

4. Read the additional links provided on Washington and DuBois. Do you think their cultural backgrounds influenced the demands they made and the ways they sought to get those demands? If yes, why? If no, why not?

5. Does anything from your upbringing and/or life experiences make you favor one of the authors over the other? If yes, which and why? If no, why not?

6. Do either of the speeches inspire you to take action against what you see as injustices in your society?If you were to take action for societal change, what action(s) would that be and why?

(Voting, volunteering/joining an organization for change, donating to causes you care about, participate in forums to educate on community issues, create/sign petitions to send to the government, contact your local/state representative, etc.)
