Assignment

Over the past seven weeks, we have covered many readings and discussed many topics.

The subject of race can be very touchy. As finance executive Mellody Hobson says, it's a "conversational third rail." But, she says, that's exactly why we need to start talking about it. In this engaging, persuasive talk, Hobson makes the case that speaking openly about race - and particularly about diversity in hiring - makes for better businesses and a better society.

Youtube Video- "Color blind or color brave? | Mellody Hobson"

The past six weeks we have talked about conflict, gender, sexuality, race, privilege, and much more. We have dared each other to be vulnerable and opened up to incredibly tough subjects. And, now it is really important to truly take some time to pause and think on why did we all of that and why it is important to address diversity. Take some time to watch the above Ted Talk from Mellody Hobson.

Think about:

• Why YOU feel that it is important to discuss diversity;
• What concerns you have about discussing intercultural matters (conflicts or otherwise) openly;
• What specific steps that you are going to take going forward.

Your final assignment is a reflection on this experience. In 3 pages, please discuss:

Two topics that were most salient to you.(Facets Of Identity & Ethical Intercultural Communication) Please be prepared to thoughtfully explain why these topics impacted you.

• Two articles and/or Ted Talks that stood out to you.

You should be prepared to properly cite in APA. Make sure to explain why these resources are significant to you.

TEDx Talks (2014, May 5) Color blind or color brave? Melody Hobso. "A Tale of Two Teachers | Melissa Crum | TEDxColumbusWomen"
TEDx Talks. (2015, July 10). "How Culture Drives Behaviours | Julien S. Bourrelle | TEDxTrondheim"

• How your communication will change going forward. What changes has this class inspired? What do you want to do differently? What are your next steps?
