• The first task of this assignment is to select a BLACK STUDIES issue of interest or concern ether in the American society, Africa or the Caribbean. The issue could have a historical Connection or could be contemporaneous in focus. An analytical approach linking the past with the present will be highly commendable. The role of outstanding black personalities and their special contributions in promoting black culture, history and heritage should also be considered. Broader issues cutting across black politics, economic life and race relations could provide useful frameworks for a fuller appreciation of African American history and experience, in particular, and the African diaspora, in general.

• Your essay topic selection should reflect the following:

1) Your perceptions and passion for choosing this topic.
2) How this topic has made an impact either positively or negatively in our society today.
3) Express thoughtful, reactive, practical suggestions on what our society, government should be doing to alleviate or assist in dealing with this issue you have identified.

• Make sure the stated issues are reflected in the relevant stages in the formulation of your topic, selection of criteria, objectives and outline of the essay.

• Make sure you define and clarify the problem your essay is addressing in the Introduction.

• Summarize previous investigations to inform the reader of the state of knowledge in the area of your investigation.

• Identify relations, contradictions, gaps and inconsistencies in the literature.

• suggest the next step or steps in solving the problem as you discuss and make your Conclusions.

• The paper should be between 3-4 pages including references.

• Use the APA format or the Chicago Manual of Style. Please be consistent. Don't mix up the two formats in the same essay!
