ANNOTATIONS

Definition: point form notes made in the margin of a reading or text thatmakes the reading or text easier to understand and refer to, for the purpose of writing a Summary, a Response Essay, a Presentation or a Report. REMEMBER an annotation is NOT a summary of what the author is saying, rather it is an opinion -your opinion - of what the author is writing about.

Read the text and as you read think of and include many of the following examples:

1) Your first impression of the first paragraph/intro and what exactly do you u think the author is going to be writing about here. What is her/his purpose And aim in exposing this information.

2) As you continue to read make notes beside the statements made by the author as to whether you agree with this statement, or disagree with it. You will note that you won't do this for EVERY statement but for most of the authors' statements.

3) Next, Jot down your reaction- how or what you feel when you read this statement. This could be positive or negative EG: this is disgusting or this really upsets me.

4) Analogy- You can also tie in what the author is saying with a previous memory of perhaps a radio/news show or movie that you heard or saw in the past, and relate how this statement or procedure reminds you of that show.

5) You can highlight ONE or TWO sentences/phrases /words that you will use as a reference - MLA/APA reference- or quotation in your writing.

6) Lastly, remember this is an Opinion Writing so you may use the first person "I" in writing.
