Statement of Purpose or "Why Am I Doing This?"

Understanding the size and scope of the transatlantic slave trade is important fora complete appreciation of the development of the institution of slavery in the wider Atlantic world. This assignment requires that you become familiar with the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database. The resource has been developed over the years using all available documentation for voyages that crossed the Atlantic from the 15th-19th centuries. Completing this assignment will guide you into a deeper awareness of the geographical reach of the slave trade and of the people most affected by it. This is intended to be an exploratory assignment. The questions on the worksheet ask for particular details, requiring you to learn how to navigate the database and extract information from it. It may be slow at the outset, but once you become familiar with the layout of the database, you will be able to move more quickly through answering the questions or verifying the statements.

Completing This Assignment:

• Before completing the questions/queries for this assignment,become familiar with the website by doing the following:

o View the Slave Trade Database Tutorial located in Module for help with navigating the database.

o Read and review the materials in the "About the Project" tab on the far right side on the database website.

- Read the section entitled "History" under this tab.

o After reading about the history of the project,go to the "Voyages Database" tabon the far left side.

- In the section entitled "Understanding the Database" under this tab, you will find a PDF file that gives detailed information on how to structure a query. Pages 11-19 of this document will apply for your purposes.

- Next, click "Search the Voyages Database" under this same tab.

• Completely fill out the Slave Trade Database Quiz Questions/Queries worksheet by using the information gained from completing queries on the website.

• Use the answers from your worksheet to complete the Slave Trade Database.
