"How Real is Race" by Carol Mukhopadhyay and Rosemary C. Henge

The assignment gives you an opportunity to see the influence of enculturation on perception of reality. How beliefs can allow atrocities and promote a moral high ground, while perpetuating heinous acts to groups of human beings. This assign has the ability to peel back the veneer of cultural indoctrination and see the actual consequences and effects on relationships, behaviors, opportunities and qualities of values determined by cultural perception. Racism is a combination of denial, avoidance and victim blame mechanisms, employed to maintain a psychologically toxic and physically deadly status quo, often without awareness by the people affected.

The first objective of this assignment is to identify that racial categories have no biological basis, scientifically; using genetic understanding, there is one race, the human race.

Second, if this is true, why do we easily see different races? Is race ethnicity? Why are our communities organized around racial labels? Why do the national census, as well as, employment applications, college campuses and media language all refer to races? What was race and racism established culturally to accomplish? And by whom, who manufactured and spread the use of racial categories and for what end?

1. What is your personal view of race, and different races? Include, how many races see in our nation.

2. Name at least 3 visible patterns do you recognize that segregate humans by racial categories in the US... You can use what you know about Orange County or the regions of the US; North, East, West and South or generally what you see in the media including; film, TV and the news.

3. Please use the article's information, to write about 5 reasons/conditions that the authors use to determine race is not a real scientifically biological category.

4. Why does the use of race seem so natural?

5. How do racial categories function in our culture?

6. If we have organized our highly stratified economic distribution by a learn perception about the value of human beings, to validate how there are used in society, then give some thought to these and explain what is happening. Be aware each of us has been taught to deny racism exists and to blame the victims of inequality for the different choices and access individuals have in our society, by race. Attempt to identify how this psychological template affects your emotional perception and understanding of this dynamic. Identifying these condition is learning to apply relativism, by recognizing how culture can control perception.

7. How does this article allow you to see cultural as a learned template of understanding?

8. The implications of this reality: Discuss this idea;

If we can organize around a fallacy that segregates humanity and allows atrocities to persist with little attention? Can we organize around more verifiable information that creates a human connection and use this to minimize human suffering and move to a more sustainable, secure world community?

9. What are your personal ideas and feelings about this assignment? This answer will not have an effect on your grade, I want you to have an opportunity to express your opinions and ideas about this subject matter outside of a question/ answer format.
