Assignment - Analysis

In the excerpt we read from "A Certain Tendency of the Hollywood Cinema", Robert Ray makes a powerful analytical move that's used frequently in academic writing. He uses a variety of secondary sources (e.g., D.H. Lawrence, Leslie Fiedler, and others who write about American literature) to analyze a new set of primary sources (e.g., Casablanca. Star Wars, and other Hollywood films). As Writing Analytically would put it. Ray uses these secondary sources as a lens to analyze the films he looks at. This assignment is designed for you to practice this analytical strategy of using a source as a lens, which prepares you for Assignments 3 and 4. Your purpose in this essay is to use Ray's ideas about hero types to analyze a film or television character of your choosing.

Choose a specific character from a recent film or television show and analyze them using Ray's essay as a critical framework. Write an essay in which you apply Ray's theory of hero types to this character, supporting your argument with evidence from the film or television show. Your essay should develop an analytical argument about what type of hem this character is and the ideological function they serve.

Assume an academic audience (your peers and other professors) who are well-educated, and have expectations regarding academic discourse, but who may not be familiar with the subject. You will be writing 2 drafts of this essay, and you will get feedback on drafts through peer response, which will help you develop and revise your essay. The essay should be 4-5 typed pages, in MLA format.
