Prompt: You read a short story from the famous collection,Dubliners, by James Joyce. These stories focus on citizens of Dublin, Joyce's hometown, in Ireland, and slices of their daily lives. In fact, the normalcy of the stories often suggest that they are uneventful, in terms of plot, but Joyce instead chose to focus on the thoughts and feelings his characters used to decide matters of life: how they feel about love, family, their life, their attitudes, etc. In fact, the story focuses on very usual issue: leaving the nest, making big changes, first love.

James Joyce was known as one of the masters of the epiphany in the short story form: meaning that the main character comes to a startling understanding about their life and their existence by the close of the story - the plot affects them in such a way that they come to this realization. The epiphany must be a natural sense of the world that the character comes to: in other words, it must be a feeling that comes organically from the events the character endures/thinks through during the story. In "Eveline," we come to understand that "running away" and "getting cold feet" are two types of interesting emotions we see running through the thoughts of the main character--which wins out, a new life or the old one?

In your assignment, in a 200-250 word paragraph, I'd like you to identify what the epiphany was that the character reached in "Eveline" and then explain, using at least three specific examples (the can be quotes or re-worded examples from the story) from the story, how she reached this epiphany.

Requirement Reminders: Please note that a paragraph is still defined as: a single paragraph, having a topic sentence that states the main point of the paper, a concluding sentence the sums up the main point of the paragraph, clear transitions between points that help ideas flow smoothly from one point to the next, three clear supporting points for the topic sentence, and then two to three supporting sentences for each topic sentence - please include at least one (no more than three), 1-2 typewritten line quote and Works Cited page for an added citation requirement; the assignment should contain no other citation, but that from the story.
