Beowulf is given a strong voice in the poem, even the Christian monk is given a chance to comment on good and evil. ls it problematic that Grendel is not given a voice in the poem? Examine and justify why evil has no voice.

Literary Essay Structure

Introduction

1. The first sentence of the paragraph should be a general statement to draw in the reader's attention.

2. The bridge sentence connects the first sentence to the thesis. It must contain the author and title of the piece under discussion. Use words such as the author reveals, observes, depicts, suggests, portrays, illustrates, infers, describes, implies, reveals to connect the two sentences.

3. The next two or three sentences should summarize the elements of the story as they relate to the topic.

4. The last sentence of the introduction is the thesis statement. The thesis must state the general subject, indicate the division of the general subject and establish the organization of the essay.

Body

1. The body of essay expands upon the supporting arguments as they relate to the thesis.

2. Each body paragraph must begin with a topic sentence that limits and organized the idea or ideas to be discussed in each paragraph.

3. All evidence provided in the paragraphs should not be stated but explained.

4. Quotes must be used to support ideas presented in the paragraphs. These quotations must be accompanied by an explanation of what is presented in the quotation. Conclusion

1. The conclusion begins by restating the idea presented in the thesis, but it is paraphrased.

2. The significance of the ideas presented in your body paragraphs must be discussed. The main points of the paper are reinforced. Ask yourself the question: what did I learn from my discussion of the topic sentence? Then answer it.

3. A clincher should be used as the final statement of the essay. A clincher can be a thought provoking quotation from the text, a solution to a problem discussed, a suggestion for change, or a statement about the significance or value of the subject.

A helpful suggest about the conclusion

• If you are stuck writing your clincher then go back to the introduction. Read your opening statement and echo it in the final sentence.

• Answer a so what question or why should I care about this topic. It makes you think about what you are suppose to get from the assignment. More importantly, it demonstrates what you have learned and allows you to share your insights.
