Questions Art Historians Ask

Refer to the assigned reading from the textbook and required videos as examples of how to interpret works of art. Also, reflect on your reading assignments for Week One.

Review the "Questions Art Historians Use" section in the Introduction of the textbook. Select two of the five questions. Explain what art historians are trying to gain by asking each question and how they might go about finding an answer.

Next, select a work of art of your choice from the textbook or from the Bonus Images in your CourseMate digital resources. (Refer to the CourseMate Guide in Week One for help accessing CourseMate for the first time. Once in your CourseMate materials for this course and textbook, locate the Bonus Images from the menu.) Apply the two questions you have selected to the work of art. Explain how you went about finding the answers to the questions and what you ultimately found those answers to be.

Be sure to include the citation for your selected work of art.

Your initial post must be at least 200 words in length.

Provide a substantive response to at least two of your classmates. Review their applications of their chosen questions to the works of art. What additional implications could be considered in answering the questions? What additional question(s) would you recommend asking about the works of art? Why?

Assignment 2

Words Art Historians Use

Refer to the assigned reading from the textbook and required videos as examples of how to interpret works of art. Also, reflect on your reading assignments for Week One.

Review the "Words Art Historians Use" section in the Introduction of the textbook. Art historians use specific terminology to describe artworks and buildings of various regions and periods.

Next, select a work of art of your choice from the textbook, museum and digital image resources in Week One, or from the Bonus Images in your CourseMate digital resources. (Refer to the CourseMate Guide in Week One for help accessing CourseMate for the first time. Once in your CourseMate materials for this course and textbook, locate the Bonus Images from the menu.) Apply three of the most important vocabulary words art historians use to describe the work of art. Explain why you chose those three terms and why they are important to analyzing art.

Be sure to include the citation for your selected work of art.

Your initial post must be at least 200 words in length.

Assignment 3

Art Journal Week Two

Refer to the assigned reading from the textbook and required videos as examples of how to interpret works of art.

Explore a museum from the list of museum and digital image resources from Week One, or go to your local museum. Select a work of art that particularly interests you and add your interpretation and analysis to your art journal (the Prezi started in Week One). In your analysis, use the terminology you learned this week. Include your personal reaction to the work of art and an image of the work.

TIP: To fully contemplate the work of art using what you have learned about art and art appreciation, it is recommended that you examine the work of art for at least ten minutes, taking note of your reactions and observations throughout your examination. Use these notes to compose your journal entry.

Include an image of the work of art you have chosen and be sure to cite the work of art.

Please follow the basic modified APA style citation format in the APA Artwork Citations document to reference works of art.

Learning Outcomes

The students will:

1. Apply the questions art historians ask to a work of art.
2. Interpret your personal reaction to a work of art based on questions art historians ask and by using the appropriate terminology.
3. Apply words art historians use to describe a work of art.

Introduction

You will explore the questions art historians ask and the words art historians use and begin to view art interpretation and appreciation as a process with its own specific terminology (Gardner & Kleiner, 2014). You will begin to apply the questions and terminology that is used by art historians to analyze and discuss works of art chosen from textbook illustrations and digital media. This application will help you hone your observational skills and your ability to analyze art from the perspective of an art historian.
