Introduction

The 1981 controller strike was a defining moment for not only air traffic controllers but labor unions across the country. Th noe sentiment that led to the strike had been festering for years and finally came to a boiling point in August of 1981. Both the controllers and management had valid reasons for taking their actions and the resultant outcomes of the strike. What were some of these outcomes? How was this strike influential to the future of air traffic control and emerging labor relations? In this assignment you will have the opportunity to answer these questions as you learn more about this strike and its pervasive influence.

Instructions
Research the controller strike of 1981. Focus your research on the following elements:
•What were the major concerns of the union?
•What, if anything, did management do to try and resolve these concerns?
•Why was the union willing to participate in what they knew would be an illegal strike?
•What was the heart of the strike? Money and time off, or control of the workplace?
•Why were other organizations watching the outcome so closely?
•Why did the government respond in the way it did?
•What were the long-term repercussions, good or bad, of the strike?

Using your findings, take the position of either the union or management. Write a 2-3 page paper explaining their stance that defends your reasoning for taking this position. Your paper should address the above topics, use appropriate citations, and be formatted according to current APA standards.
