1. Loneliness is a central theme in this novel. Although all of the characters live in close proximity, they all seem to be lonely. What evidence from the text supports this theme of loneliness, and do you think that this loneliness is socially imposed, personal choice, or both? Explain.

2. Consider the fate of Crooks, Candy, Lennie, and Curley's wife; they are all outcasts to society. With this in mind, what statement does Steinbeck make about individuals who are outcasts by society?
