2. Socio-economic determinism with human beings seen as victims of environmental forces and products of social and economic factors beyond their control or full understanding.

3. Naturalistic attempt to be objective, even documentary.

4. Amoral in view, neither condemning nor praising humanity.

5. Pessimistic in view of human capabilities-life is a vicious trap, a cruel game.

6. Frank and direct in portrayal of human beings as animals driven by fundamental urges-fear, hunger, sex.
