Addition to Conjugated Dienes Conjugated dienes are molecules in which there are two double bonds separated by one single bond. This orientation of double bonds increases the stability of the molecules in comparison to similar alkane or alkene molecules. Conjugated dienes can participate in many of the same addition reactions as their alkene counterparts. Part A The first step of an addition to a conjugated diene involves the addition of an electrophile to form a resonance stabilized allylic cation. Draw both resonance structures of the allylic cation formed when one molecule of adds to the symmetrical diene, 3,4-dimethylhexa-2,4-diene.
