DESCRIPTIONS:

A. This mineral enhances flavor and is often added to processed foods (boxed, packaged, or canned items) as a preservative. The typical American consumes between 3000 and 7000 mg per day. The Dietary Guidelines recommend no more than 2300 mg/day to reduce the risk of hypertension.

B. This mineral functions as an electrolyte in the body and appears to have an anti-hypertensive effect (meaning that it helps prevent and/or correct hypertension). Fresh fruit, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products are some of the best sources. The recommendation is 4,700 mg per day.

C. The recommendation for teens is 1,300 mg/day. The recommendation for adults is 1,000 mg/day. The "Rule of 300s" is sometimes used to determine sufficient intake of this mineral (i.e. A Mixed Diet = 300 mg, 1 cup Milk = 300 mg, 1 oz Cheese = 300 mg, and 1 cup Yogurt = 300 mg).

D. A deficiency of this mineral is most prevalent among women and teenage girls. Symptoms include significant fatigue (especially after phys ical exertion), apathy, abnormal paleness, irritability, frequent headaches, increased heart rate, sore or swollen tongue, and sensitivity to cold temperature
