4. Verb Tense

Write 2 paragraphs about two people who have been important in your life. Try to use both affirmative and negative verb forms.

Underline all the verbs and identify the verb tense in each. In the first paragraph write about a person who is no longer alive. Tell who

the person was, when he or she was born, where he or she lived, his or her relationship to you, and why this person was important to you. In the second paragraph write about a person who is still living.

8. Prepositions

Write a paragraph describing a specific event you attended or an experience you had. Be sure to identify when and where the event or experience occurred. Include how you reacted, how you felt, what you thought, and what you did. Before you begin, make a list of 8 prepositions that you will use. Circle the prepositions that you were able to use.

9. Word Form

Write a paragraph about a current event. You may use a topic featured on TV, the newspaper or school. Give a short background of the issue. Describe the problem, when it happened, why it exists and who is involved. Pay close attention to word form.

10. Modals

Write a paragraph about something special that you have achieved in your life. Give some background that includes how old you were during this time and why it was important for you to achieve this goal. Explain the events that led up to this success. How did you feel after this achievement? Include at least 4 infinitives and four gerunds in your paragraph.

11. Passive Voice + Participial adjectives

Write 1-3 paragraphs that report the news about an event (real or imagined). Tell what happened, when it happened, and why it happened. Try to give numbers and examples of details of the event. Describe people's reactions to the event. Try to use passive voice.

12. Conditionals

Write a paragraph about an event that did not have a good ending. Explain how things would have been different if certain conditions had existed or if other events had happened. Use at least 3 if-clauses.

13. Word Order

Write a paragraph about a special place that you would like to visit. Identify the place and describe it. Tell why you want to visit that place. Use some verb + prepositions in this paragraph.


14. Adjective Clauses

Write a paragraph about your school. Give descriptions of some of your classmates, the classrooms, your instructors, or the textbooks.

Use at least 5 adjective clauses. Use as many of these relative pronouns as you can: who, where, when, that, why, whose.

15. Adverb clauses

Write a paragraph or more about something that you did as a child that you were punished for (or praised). Include the following information:

What you did

Whom you were with

How it happened

Why you did it

How you got caught or how someone found out

What kind of punishment (or praise) you received.

If you ever did it again

17. Better sentences

Describe one of your dreams. Try to use all sentence types simple, compound with FANBOYS, compound with transitions, adverb clause. Vary sentences also by starting with a prepositional phrase etc.

18. Parallel structure

Imagine you are running for a school office such as student government senator etc. Write a speech representing your view of an issue or offering solutions to an issue important at the college (increased tuition, smokers in front etc.) Use parallel structure.

19. Confusing words

Write a paragraph giving advice on staying healthy or giving your opinion about an issue at the college. Use words from this list:
