1. What does the text say about failure as a motivator?  Do you agree?  Is it, or isn't it?  Why or why not?  Talk about it, but don't just give me an "arm chair" opinion, respond to what the authors are trying to say about it.  If you want to include the thoughts of other scholars, you may, but it is not required - just cite your sources, if you do.

2. On pages 52-56 there is a section entitled Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation.  Read that section carefully and thoughtfully.  Once you have read it, react to it here in some way that you choose yourself.  For example, you might write about the implications of extrinsic motivation as being less effective than intrinsic motivation and how that relates to issuing grades.  Or, maybe you would prefer to talk about the implications of intrinsic motivation and how a knowledge of student interest may help you motivate your students.  As you can see, I'm asking you to read, then stop and think, then maybe check out other information, then think a little more, then write something that is meaningful to you which might be meaningful to others.  You do not need to write extensively, just enough to communicate your thoughts - one paragraph or maybe two or three if you wish.
