Your effort to implement this operating model to guide Information Technology (IT) decision will be measured daily. The model will promote an operational and implementation framework that includes structure that facilitates communication, root-cause analysis, and continuous service improvement opportunities. If the model is implemented well it can provide management with information they will need to make informed time-based decisions.

Your will model your IT operational framework after the corporate model. You will have the authority to make your implementation as modular in nature as you see necessary. You department should be comprised of major functional areas such as networks, systems, and end user support. The functional areas should also contain related sub-elements. These sub-elements should be similar so that you can align your resources accordingly. The functional area managers will be fully integrated into the decision process. They will be the principal implementers of this new model. You will be required to identify legacy IT and develop a process to refresh them. All IT projects will belong to your organization and you will be responsible for managing them to schedule and to budget.

You will initially have to pay for this out of hide in terms of human capital. Also, budgets are tight and will need to prioritize projects. You will be expected to identify your training needs. You will also be responsible for developing the bills of material for needed refresh items.

In the short term your department will be stretched to the limit in terms of your level of effort. Different elements will be in play at the same time and it could become difficult to keep track. You will have to put your best managers forward to assure the success of this effort. In the long term this model will be the means by which the IT department establishes standardized processes. It will help identify need areas and efficiently acquire necessary resources, improve communications and overall customer service.
