Tissue Mechanics

Deformation of Soft Tissue Under Planar Biaxial Loading Condition Project

Description

We have studied the basic foundation of biomechanics and learned how to calculate the deformation gradient and Green strain. In this project, you will be given a set of biaxial test data, including 2D coordinates of 4 markers and the first Piola-Kirchhoff stress (N) values in two directions at each frame (state). The first frame (first row) will be used as a reference configuration, and the rest of the data are deformed configurations. The goal of this project is to use experimental data to find the deformation gradient (F), Green strain (E) and the second Piola-Kirchhoff stress (S) of a soft tissue specimen under a planar biaxial loading condition at each frame.

Experimental Input Data: The format of the attached biaxial test data (in the Excel file) is as follows:

N1

N2

X1

X2

X3

X4

Y1

Y2

Y3

Y4

where N1 and N2 are nominal stresses (kPa) of the specimen in the circumferential (1) and longitudinal (2) axes; X1- X4 and Y1- Y4 are the coordinates (in pixel) of the 4 markers on the specimen. You need to calculate F, E, and S from the experiment data.

Software: Matlab, MathCAD or any other software and write a program for the calculation. Project report requirements

Introduction: A short description of the project (a few sentences).

Methods: This section serves to introduce your methods, the procedure and the equations you used in your program. A descriptive summary of your code should be included here.

Results/Discussion: This section serves to show your final results. You need to plot En vs Sii and E22 vs S22 in the same figure as the biaxial data. Discuss what you found. Is it what you had expected? Are the stress and strain values reasonable?

Program: Attach a copy of the original formatted program (e.g. *.m MATLAB). The program should be able to plot the curves presented in your report.

The project report should be no more than 4 single-spaced pages. Please upload the report and the original program file as attachments on T-square and include your name in the file names.
