This project may be performed in groups of 2 students! Please be sure to prepare one single submission with both team members' names on it.
1) Using either one of the machines in JD 1600B, a virtual machine, or your own local Windows installation, install Disk Investigator (http://download.cnet.com/Disk-Investigator/3000-2248_4-10255339.html)
• You may install Windows 7 or 8 on a machine of your choice in JD 1600B, if necessary.
2) Obtain a USB thumb drive and format it as FAT32.
3) Place an ASCII text file (.txt extension) in the root directory of the USB thumb drive. You may use Notepad or Notepad++ to generate such a file. For example: \foobar.txt
• NOTE: 2% Extra Credit on your final course grade can be obtained for making a 2-level deep directory tree, and placing the file in this directory...for example: \files\textfiles\foobar.txt
4) Using Disk Investigator, open the Master Boot Record (MBR) of the USB thumb drive. Starting here, and using any reference for FAT you can find online (or elsewhere), locate the following structures, and record their cluster numbers.
• The FAT (File Allocation Table, either copy)
• The Root Directory table
• If you are performing the Extra Credit, where did you find each of your subdirectories?
• The name of your file (e.g. foobar.txt)
• The contents of your file (e.g. the text inside foobar.txt)
5) How many sectors per cluster on the USB thumb drive? How large is each sector? How large is each cluster? Record this information, as well as EXACTLY WHERE YOU FOUND IT.
6) If not previously mentioned, how did you find this information. Include the offsets within the relevant structures, and which information/tech-references you used to locate these items.
