The opportunity to explore the design process and how it is applied within an engineering context.Purpose of this assignment

Understanding of hydraulic transmission principles and the aircraft applications for hydraulic power

Aim and purpose of the unit:

This unit gives learners the opportunity to explore the design process and how it is applied within an engineering context.

Description of unit:
An understanding of how the design process operates within an engineering business is important for anyone considering a career in the design and manufacture of products. This unit provides learners with the opportunity to consider design in a holistic way. It combines study of the technical aspects of engineering design with wider issues such as the environment, sustainability and legislation.

- Business Operations in Engineering
- Properties and Applications of
- Engineering Materials
- Engineering Drawing for Technicians
- Computer Aided Drafting in
- Engineering
- Engineering Secondary and Finishing
- Techniques and Processes
- Computer Aided Manufacturing

Outcome Contents:
1. Know how the design process operates when dealing with customers
2. Know the impact that legislation, standards and environmental and manufacturing constraints can have on the design function
3. Be able to prepare design proposals that meet the requirements of a product design specification
4. Be able to produce and present a final design solution.

Hardware: - a range of customer design requirements
- a range of products to investigate design requirement features
- manual drawing equipment
- 2D commercial CAD software
- extracts and illustrations from appropriate drawing standards and conventions
- access to reference material which provides information about the physical and mechanical properties of
- materials
- access to legislation and design standards
- component and material suppliers' catalogues.

Week Topics within this outcome

1 The design process: triggers eg market pull, demand, profitability, technology push, innovation, market research; process of design for manufacture; decision making; use of new technologies eg computer aided design (CAD), simulation, rapid prototyping, computer integrated manufacture (CIM); lines of communication

2 Customer: customer/client relationship; types of customer eg external, internal; requirements of customereg performance specifications (physical dimensions, mass), compliance to operating standards, reliability and product support, end of life disposal, production quantities (custom built, modification to an existing product, small batch, large volume)

3 Product design specification (PDS): analysis of customer requirements; production of an agreed PDS; documentation eg physical dimensions, materials, mass, operation and performance

Criteria  - To achieve the criteria the evidence must show that the student is able to:
P1 - describe the operation of the design process in an engineering company
P2 - interpret the requirements of a given customer and produce a product design specification
M1 - explain the possible impact of a poor customer design process on customer relationships and requirements

Scenario:

Suppose you have joined a renowned engineering company as trainee designengineer, where your job is to design the aircraft components. For this purpose, you must have good knowledge over design software, manufacturing, standards & legislation and customer requirements. Now your director manager told you to observe and check the following functions, operations and parts of an aircraft and make an observation report whether it required any sort of updates in the design activities or not.

Instructions:
Completion of all tasks listed in the assignment should be made in the assignment sheet.

Writing Instruction:
Writing of the tasks should be done in the following methods.

1. Answer of the questions should be given in own word and in simple English.

2. At the end of the assignment there should be bibliography of the additional papers or documents. Give reference of the sources (books, notes, internet links etc.) you have collected the information from.

Task-P1

Learners have visited the CADD Centre in Uttara, Sector-3, Dhaka. CADD centre is a renowned engineering design company. They have conducted a face to face interview with the design Engineer Mr.Toufiqul Islam Mithu. Based on your visit now describe the operation of the design process in the CADD Centre.

Task-P2
Use an appropriate engineering product as an example to interpret the customer's requirement and produce a product design specification.

Task - M1
Based on your visit at the CADD Centre discuss the possible impact of poor customer design process on customer relationship and requirements.
