Introduction:

The description below pertains to the project required for CPEG 309 (Advanced Digital Systems). Please note the following carefully:

1) Review the engineering design process requirements at www.iisme.org/etp/HS%20Engineering-%20Engineering.pdf  in detail.

2) Follow the design criteria (as described in the document) and implement a digital system design of your choice all the way to the hardware level.

3) prepare a detailed report about your project describing every design criteria pertinent to your project in detail. Include the following headings:

a) PROBLEM DEFINITION
b) PERTINENT INFORMATION
c) MULIPLE SOLUTIONS
d) ANALYSIS AND SELECTION OF A SOLUTION
e) TESTING AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SOLUTION

Goal: The goal is to simulate a real life product development and familiarize students with the design process of a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.

Requirements:

a) Develop a problem statement - identify the need and criteria for acceptability

b) Collect relevant information for the design.

c) Generate design solutions.

  • combine new ideas, tools and methods
  • use mathematics, science, and engineering as appropriate

d) Analyze design solutions.

  • pick appropriate engineering standards
  • select realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability, and select the best solution

e) Implement the design.

Purpose: The aim is to design and develop a practical device using logic gates and sequential and combinational logic.

Project Selection
The instructor will identify a few sample projects.  Each team (maximum of two students) must then propose its own project or pick one of the sample projects. At a minimum, a product should include one AND, one OR, and one NOT gate.

Sample Projects:

Home Security System:

The objective of this project is to design and develop a home security system. The system should have the capability to monitor four different sensors (e.g. motion detector, door entry, window switches, fire alarm). The system will continuously monitor the sensors for a change of state condition (1 to 0 or vice versa). If a change is detected, an alarm goes off.

Two Way Traffic Light:

The objective of this project is to design and develop a digital controller required to control traffic at a busy intersection and an occasionally used side street. The main street is to have a green light for a minimum of 25 seconds or as long as there is no vehicle on the side street. The side street is to have a green light until there is no vehicle on the side street or for a maximum of 25 seconds. There is to be a 4-second caution light (yellow) between changes from green to red on both the main street and the side street.

Synch/Asynch Counter:

The objective of this project is to design and develop a synchronous or asynchronous 3-bit (at least) counter that would count in any order, but normal. Digital counter are made from a series of flip-flops that are clocked together (synchronous) or independently (asynchronous). The modulus of a counter is the number of different output states the counter may take.

Shift Register:

The objective of this project is to design and develop a shift register counter. A shift register is a series of flip-flops connected so that data can be transferred to a neighbor each time the clock pulse is active. An ex is the display of a calculator. As numbers are entered on the keypad, the previously entered numbers are shifted to the left. Shift registers can be made to shift data to the left, to the right, or in either direction, using a control signal.
