System Analysis

Part 1: Begin with your group's diagram in Mental Modeler. Finish the model, revising it to be more comprehensive, and demonstrating that you have put thought and effort into the revision. Be sure to identify every relationship as positive or negative and assign a value to the relationship. Categorize the components and assign each category a color in the group pane that shows when you click on a component. Under the Scenario tab, create several scenarios that systematically test the impacts of increasing or decreasing one or more variables. Systematically means first only change things one at a time, before you try any combinations. Choose a scenario that generates interesting results that you are able to explain.

Part 2: Read pages 1-11 in the Introduction to Systems Thinking document by Daniel Kim. Stop after you finish reading the section on delays.

Part 3: Draw a causal loop diagram of some components of your causal map from Part 1. You will need to consider which components could interact as part of a causal loop, and that might require changing the directions of the relationships or adding new components. Draw at least two feedback loops. Continue drawing feedback loops until you have at least one balancing and one reinforcing loop, and that you have incorporated both human and natural components in the loops. Select two feedback loops, one balancing and one reinforcing, and consider whether these interact with each other (they may or may not). If they interact, draw them as part of the same system. Redraw your selected diagrams using illustration software.

Part 4: Write at least one page of text explaining your diagrams. Place your diagrams after the text, referring to your revised causal map as Figure 1, one scenario as Figure 2, and causal loop diagram in Figure 3. Be sure your diagrams include legends and that each has an informative caption. The text must be typed, single spaced with font size between 11 and 12, and checked for spelling and grammar.
