Scenario

You are working for a motor car company as a junior engineer.  The company sees that there will be more and more demand for electric cars within the next 10 years.  They have asked a group of you to prepare a full design specification for an electric car.  Although the battery is the main source of energy but you are free to explore the solar energy as an additional (but not prime) source of energy.  This is group design and you need, as a group, to cover all areas of the electric car design.

(NOTE- As an individual you can focus on just one aspect of the electric car.  For example you need to deal with only one of the following points in electric cars:

  • Solar system used in electric cars
  • Drive system
  • Electric motor used (ac v dc)
  • Breaking system
  • Mechanical design of the car body)

You need to submit your design specification report on week 15 (one report per group).  The report should be between 15-20pages (A4) and should cover the following points:

1)    A design specification to meet customer requirements.  This should include:

  • Establishment of customer requirements.
  • Presentation of the major design parameters.
  • Gathering design information from appropriate sources and prepare a design specification.
  • Demonstration that the design specification meets requirements.

2)    Analysis and evaluation of possible design solutions.  This should include:

  • Productionof the analysis of possible design solutions
  • Production and evaluation of conceptual designs
  • Selection of the optimum design solution
  • Carrying out a compliance check
  • Production of a final design report

3)    Application of a suitable computer based software in the engineering designprocess.  This should contain:

  • Explanation of the key features of a computer-aided design system
  • The use of computer-aided design software to produce a design drawing or scheme
