Question: In this unit, you will have an opportunity to delve into the bits-and-pieces that comprise a computer system. You will be learning about computer fundamentals, such as motherboards, memory, central processing units (CPUs), storage devices, power supplies, and adapters, to name a few. You will also complete assorted tasks in working with these computer system elements using a simulated environment called LabSim. Examples of tasks you could complete in this simulated environment are to install memory or a power supply! Better to do this in a simulated environment rather than your computer. It is much safer and a great way to get started!

Although you may have used a personal computer system or a PDA (personal digital assistant), such as a cell phone, for years, you may not have had the opportunity to look into the internals of a computer device. As an IT professional, understanding what is enclosed in the computer case is an important foundational piece of knowledge. One cannot command the IT environment unless one has a general sense of what is happening inside the case.

In this unit you will learn how to do the following:

• Describe hardware and software components

• Identify basic components of an end-user computer system

• Describe the terminology and function of common computer hardware, software, and components

• Install and configure computer hardware components

• Explain how the components of a computer system interrelate

You can now start your adventure in developing your confidence and self-esteem with information technology-specifically, computer hardware. Using a simulated environment like LabSim is a tremendous way to take on challenging new tasks with a positive attitude and without fear of breaking anything. This will provide you with a safe environment from which you can learn from mistakes!
