Q1: Level 1 WBS Elements With reference to the referenced example job drawings list at least 5 Level 1 Elements of a potential WBS.

Q2: Level 2 WBS Headings Select 5 of the Level 1 Elements from Q1 and list potential Level 2 Headings under each. Use of the example DPTI WBS can be made for typical headings, however relevance to the example drawings must be maintained.

Q3: Level 3 WBS ItemsSelect at least 2 of the Level 1 Elements and their respective Level 2 Headings and make a comprehensive listing of Level 3 Items under each that exist on the drawings.

Q4: Referencing the source of your answers

Mark up the specific drawing detail / note (on the drawing) with a reference and include this in the table of answers to demonstrate the source of the your answers to questions 1-3.

Q5: Progress Claim Format

One of the uses of a well structured WBS is the recording and valuing of progress on the project. Research the format that this valuation may take and complete this format with a maximum of 20 cost items (Level 3 items). It is expected that you will need to research the following in preparation for your answer

  • What is the purpose of a progress claim
  • What key information should be included
  • What summary information should be presented

NOTE: The cost items only need to be examples of a format and no specific accuracy of

Complete a WBS and quantity measurement for drainage elements (structures and culverts only) including appropriate units from the drawing "SEMP-J150-L1-001 Rev C".

Further complete a WBS and quantity measurement for signage elements including appropriate units from the drawing "SEMP-J150-L1-003 Rev C".

Q7: Earthworks Calculation

For the given table of measured cross sections calculate the total cut and fill quantities.

The answer should incorporate a complete tabular calculation.

Calculate the cut to fill quantity and the import / export volumes.

Q8: Site inspection

Source and provide photos of a typical urban intersection (plan and street view). By viewing the photos of the site list at least 5 scope items that may be required that are not described on the design drawings and describe your basis for including them.

Q9: Summary of Project Scope for Review purposes

The effective briefing of management participants in tender reviews is an important skill. The success of the review process in the workflow may depend upon the summary of scope and existing conditions. With reference to the example drawings from Tutorial 1 and the above photos prepare a one page summary to brief the review teamList the different resource types commonly used in first principle estimates and provide at least 5 examples of resources for each type. For 2 of the 5 examples of each type describe the work activity / role that this resource may play in a typical civil construction project.

Q11: First principle estimate

Prepare a first principle estimate for the following activities

The following client provided WBS is to be used as the basis of pricing

Item Description Qty Unit Rate Amt

1 General Civil Works

1.1

Excavation to stockpile of soil

materials, lead = 1km 500 m3

1.2

Supply and place 250mm of PM1/20

gravel to hardstand 10,000 m2

Subtotal - General Civil Works

Q10: Resource Types

List the different resource types commonly used in first principle estimates and provide at least 5 examples of resources for each type. For 2 of the 5 examples of each type describe the work activity / role that this resource may play in a typical civil construction project.

Q12: Types of risk

Briefly y describe the difference between inherent and contingent risk.

List and describe a contingent risk that may apply to the first principle estimate in Q11.Q13: Inherent Risk Ranging

Provide 3 example direct cost items (Level 3) and insert into the example layout provided. Undertake ranging of the quantity and rates with discussion of the basis of this ranging. Calculate statistically possibly L-ML-H amounts for each item.

Q14: Contingent Risk Identification

Provide 3 example examples of contingent risk items for a roadworks project. Insert a range of costs for each (just insert "example" data) and discuss the basis of this ranging.

Indicate a percentage likelihood for each item based upon your approach to the ranging and the nature of contingent risk item selected.
