Project title - "Methyl Ethyl Ketone design plant"

Design Project work

The following tasks are to be done and the report is to be submitted before the final exam and complete the Project Presentation

Task Description

1 Introduction
Write a short description of project work and objectives of selected project title

2 Individual tasks
Develop a task chart, showing key project tasks, their duration, responsible person and deadlines for the submissions.

3 Literature Survey
Describe the principle and operations of selected project title to be designed for each unit and present a decision chart for your chosen technology. If possible both qualitative and quantitative analysis to be prepared based on the selected technology with explanatory notes.

4 Block Diagram & Description
Develop a block diagram of the complete process (neatly hand drawn or using HYSYS or any suitable method) showing the important process block and short description of each block to be written.

5 Site Selection:
List the various issues to be considered in the selection of site for the process plant

6 Lay out:
Draw the process plant layout with auxiliary requirements

7 Waste Management:
Give details of the waste generated by the process and the management of the waste.

8 Environmental Impact :
Elaborate the environmental impacts of the process (air, water and solid waste generated by the selected process)

9 Mass Balance and Energy Balance:
Preliminary mass and energy balances covering the following items to be covered based on process flow sheet.
Key items are:
- Process calculation sheets or Excel spreadsheets or HYSYS stream summaries with attached notes to explain the basis of the balances.
- clear statement of assumptions used
- state time basis for balances
- reference all balances to PFD streams and process equipment designations
- state all data and parameter references used in the balances
- provide all technical references and a separate reference listing page

10 Process Design:
Each member is to select major process equipment (Heat Exchangers, Distillation column, Separators, Reactors, Extractors, Absorption column, dryer, Adsorption column, evaporator, condensers, etc) and design the equipment. Compare the design value obtained with the actual design. State the reasons for the difference.
An equipment schedule showing all processing equipment in the section and their equipment designations consistent with the newly developed PFDs.
For each piece of major equipment state:
- basis of equipment selection
- basis for the shortcut design such as residence time, heat load, throughput, product quality, operating P and T, etc.
- Discuss the engineering materials required for the equipment. Discuss the selection of material for the major process equipment relevant to the process conditions.

Preliminary detailed equipment design:
- Basis of the design
- Standard(s) to be used for mechanical design
- Type of equipment and selection criteria
- Indication of any internals supports or ancillary equipment needed for operating and design temperatures/pressures

11 Process Flow Diagram: (PFD)
Develop preliminary process flow diagrams (PFDs) for the plant after the mass and energy balance calculation and & design of major process equipment's.
The diagram to be created in either hand written or using AUTOCAD showing with necessary operating parameters such as pressure, temperature, flow rate. Level, etc...
The important part of the PFD to be included the following points :
- All major equipment/operations clearly labeled streams and equipment using a consistent identification scheme descriptor of key items vertically above the corresponding equipment.
- Represent the process equipment operating data (inflow, out flow conditions, temp, pressure, concentration, catalyst loading and other chemical related data) obtained from mass and energy balance and design of process equipment's

12 Process Control Systems:
Give an overview of the industrial control systems. Mention the control schemes suitable for the given process
Process Instrumentation Diagram: (PID)
(section of the plant)A set of P&IDs for each section based on the PFDs. measurements and the like can be drawn neatly by hand. All loop elements to have identification codes. P&IDs to be in A3 size. (max of 3 drawings per section/unit in-line with PFDs)
A technical description of the process units with clear references to the PFD number and streams and equipment shown on the PFDs. Justification of the specific choices and processing route that was taken

13 Maintenance Requirements:
Present the maintenance requirements of the selected equipment, and give the schedule for such maintenance. Elaborate on the kinds of maintenance methods

14 HSE Requirement:
Present Health Safety & Environment information related to the process, product, byproducts, catalysts, etc. Provide details about the safety related to the selected process, equipment, protective systems, hazards and personal protective equipment to be used during the operation of the plant

15 Cost Estimation:
Based on the production capacity, determine the capital and operating cost for the process plant

16 Process Economics:
Evaluate the various factors related to economics (Cash flow, investment, profits, corporate taxes)

17 Industrial Management:
Elucidate the industrial management & personnel requirements of the industry

18 Conclusion & References
Write the summary of actual project work is carried out and indicates the necessary references
