Probability and Statistics

Make sure that you write complete probability statements for each question. Clearly define your events and include any formulas necessary questions.

1) A company has 500 employees. The manager would like to randomly choose 30 employees to complete a survey regarding employee attitudes. Use Line 16 of the random digit table in the textbook and write down the number of the first 10 employees that will be chosen for
this survey.

2) The Brown County Humane society has compiled data on lost dogs over the last 5 years.

The table below lists the data for 5 common breeds of dog. Beagle Pitbull Yorkshire Terrier Golden Retriever Poodle

14 6 2 37 11

According to this data, calculate the following probabilities.

a) Probability the lost dog is a Golden Retriever.

b) Probability that the lost dog is not a Golden Retriever.

c) Probability that the lost dog is a Beagle or Pitbull. (Use the addition rule)

3) You draw a single card from a standard deck of cards. What is the probability of:

a) Choosing the ace of spades?

b) Choosing a 5?

c) Choosing a Jack or a club? (Use the addition rule)

d) Choosing the 9 of hearts or a red card? (Use the addition rule)

e) Choosing a 4 or an 8? (Use the addition rule)

4) A bag contains 8 blue, 7 red, and 5 green marbles. Two marbles are chosen from the bag without replacement. What is the probability of choosing:

a) Two blue marbles? (Use the multiplication rule)

b) A blue and then a green marble? (Use the multiplication rule)

c) A red and a blue marble or blue and red marble? (use the multiplication and addition rule)

5) A bag contains 8 blue, 7 red, and 5 green marbles. Two marbles are chosen from the bag with replacement. What is the probability of choosing:

a) Two blue marbles? (Use the multiplication rule)

b) A blue and then a green marble? (Use the multiplication rule)

c) A red and a blue marble or a blue and a red marble? (use the multiplication and addition rule)

6) You roll a pair of fair dice. What is the probability of:

a) Rolling a 3 on die 1 and a 4 on die 2? (Use the multiplication rule)

b) Rolling a 3 and a 4 without regard to which die has the 3 or 4? (Use the multiplication rule and then the addition rule)
