PHASE - Reservoir simulationAims of Phase IV:

- To carry out a research analysis on a particular aspect of oil field development.

- To engage in a reservoir simulation practical activity including: problem definition; method selection; data gathering; preparation of a design solution with calculations, data sheets, sketches and drawings; checking, review and criticism of results.

Part A:

Research: The research will be focus on gas and water coning during production and strategies used to control water/gas coning in field development. You also will review principles of reservoir simulation, assumptions made and uncertainties.

Your research has to include a discussion on the following parts:

- Physical principles in which reservoir simulation is based on.
- Required information to build a reservoir simulation model, including a discussion of effect of possible uncertainties and assumptions made.
- Explain Recovery Methods and Gas and Water conning.
- Principles and strategies used during field development to control and/or manage Gas and Water conning.

Note: You might find useful to use some cases studies to support your discussion.

Part B:

Simulation: In this part you will apply what you learn in Part A in a practical case.

"Field development strategy of an oilfield using Petrel Reservoir Engineering (RE)"

"Student will be provided with data to import and they have to follow steps learned in workshops to make a 3D model:

- Calculate OOIP.

- Follow steps to make a reservoir engineering model including an active aquifer.

- Analyse production of existing wells with natural depletion for 20 years. Identify water breakthrough and discuss alternatives to delay and/or minimize water production.

- Calculate the critical rate for water coning for your given case.

- Design and locate new wells and re-design existing wells so that you can delay water conning.

- Explain how mobility ratio affects water conning, what options do you have to modify mobility ratio?.

- Propose 3 development cases and support your plan. Compare proposed scenarios technical and economical. Assume cost of wells and any treatment.

Report

The main body of your report must not exceed 20 sides (A4, Font: Arial 11 or Times New Roman 12, Single spacing).

All figures and tables must be numbered and titled (Position: below figures / above tables). The structure and content of the report should be as follows:

Abstract

List of Contents

1. Introduction and objectives

2. Part A: Research

Topic
Fundamental Aspects of Reservoir Simulation:
- Physical principles in which reservoir simulation is based on,
- Required information to build a reservoir simulation model, including a discussion of effect of possible uncertainties and assumptions made.
Specific Technical Aspect Gas and Water Coning and strategies for Field Development:
- Explain Recovery Methods and Gas and Water conning
- Principles and strategies used in to control Gas and Water conning. ((supporting by technical papers)

3. Part B: Simulation

Topic

- Description of processes, proposed plan and sensitivity analysis of cases. Follows steps described on part B including economic analysis
- Simulation (An electronic version of your simulation have to be submitted with your report). "Your electronic version must include all your cases and have to be original"

You will receive support on the use of reservoir simulator to be able complete your project. There will be some workshops for you to get practical skills in the use of Petrel RE.
