Microprocessor

Discussion 1

Shift registers are one of the most important building blocks in digital systems hardware. In this course, you are using the 74HC595 device which is a "serial in parallel out (SIPO)" shift register. There are several other types of shift registers, and between them, they share a multitude of applications.

For this discussion, you have to do your Internet research on the different types of shift registers and their applications. Select one particular type of shift register and write a 300 word note describing your findings. Please reference all the resources (at least two) that you use.

You are already using the Processing application for creating interaction between the graphical display on the computer desktop and the physical variables sensed by the Arduino hardware. This opens up very interesting possibilities for conceiving and implementing unique projects. Arduino Project Hub lists four such Processing projects, which you may browse.

Please make your initial post of about 300 words by reviewing and commenting on these projects and giving any new ideas for such work that come to your mind.

Discussion 3

Interrupts were invented to allow a computer to continue "computing" rather than wasting time waiting in a loop, while exchanging data with slow input/output devices. This concept is explained nicely in Chapter 12 of the textbook. "Interrupts" have come a long way since that time. Here are some of the terms that you will come across while looking at the specifications of interrupts in processor datasheets:

• Hardware, software, timer
• Vectored or non-vectored
• Maskable or non-maskable
• Prioritized or non-prioritized L
• evel triggered or edge-triggered

These terms represent the types or attributes of interrupts. For this discussion, you have to do your Internet research on the above terms related to interrupts. After gaining some knowledge of the topics, please write a 300 word note describing your understanding of some of the above terms. This will be your initial post. Please reference all the resources (at least two) that you use.
