Tasks:

The tasks below are listed in bulleted form to help make sure students address all of the assignment's requirements however, your submission needs to be written in report format, with appropriate section headings, and the information must be presented in sentences and paragraphs. Task descriptions must be included within these paragraphs - a reader needs to be able to understand what you are doing, without reference to this assignment document!

1. Choose one of the following products of the Chemical Process Industries*:
a. High fructose corn syrup
b. Titanium dioxide pigment
c. Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
d. Silane (SiH4)
e. Vinyl chloride monomer
f. Trimethyl aluminum

2. In paragraph form, present a summary that includes the following information:

a. Give a description of the product and its physical and chemical properties, including a chemical structure drawing.

b. Give a brief description of the uses to which the product is put. Describe a process (or processes) that uses your product to manufacture something that is directly purchased or used by consumers.

c. Give a brief description of the usual raw materials used to produce the product, and where they are obtained from (mines in WW country; crude oil from XX country; commodity chemicals produce by YY company in ZZ country. As best you can, trace these raw materials back to the biosphere: the earth; oceans, rivers and lakes; and the atmosphere.

d. Identify at least one company the produces your product and where the production facilities are located (city, country).

e. Is your product a commodity chemical or a specialty chemical? Specify US and/or world production of the product for some recent year (some year after 2005)

3. Provide a process flow diagram for at least one process that produces your product. (Also valuable: a flow diagram for of a process that uses your product as a raw material input.) The process flow diagram must include chemical reactor(s). On the process flow diagram identify process input and output streams, and all major processing units (reactors, mixers, separators [distillation, e.g.]) - intermediate vessels, pumps, and valves are not necessary. You may use a published process flow diagram, but it must conform to diagram requirements given in the Assignment Requirements document (i.e., black lines on a white background), you must properly cite it, input and output streams must be labeled with their major components, and major process units must be labeled. Images cannot exceed 1.8 Mb! In most cases it will be less time-consuming to re-draw the diagram yourself. Your diagram must be black and white, with a white background. Briefly describe/discuss the process depicted in the diagram.

4. Find and discuss at least one environmental/sustainability issue associated with the product or its process: e.g., what is the issue, what approaches are taken to address it, what environmental regulations are most relevant to the issue, etc.

5. Find and discuss at least one safety issue associated with the product or its process: e.g., what is the issue, what approaches are taken to address it, what safety regulations are most relevant to the issue, etc.

6. Find, present, and discuss the following:

a. Capital cost estimates of at lest 2 major equipment items used in the process (distinct units, not process sections);

b. Selling price per lbm of your product at any time within the past 10 years. (the selling price should be the commodity price - what the manufacturer will sell it for, not the price you would pay for, say 1 lbm from a lab supply store);

c. Cost per lbm of one or more of the process raw materials (excluding water, oxygen, nitrogen, air, CO2 methane, coal, or unrefined petroleum).
