I. Internet technologies - Assessment item 2

Task

Provide short answers to the following six questions. Your answers should be clear, concise and to the point. Prepare a single document (MS Word or PDF, NOT both) along with title page and submit it online using EASTS.

Question 1: The address depletion of IPv4 and other shortcomings of this protocol prompted a new version of IP known as IPv6. Explain the advantages of this new IPv6 when compared to IPv4?

Question 2: Migrating from IPv4 to IPv6 is known as the transition from version 4 to version 6 and requires formal strategies to handle this transition. Explain each of the strategies for this migration process using appropriate examples.

Question 3: Calculate the approximate bit rate and signal level(s) for a 4.2 MHz bandwidth system with a signal to noise ratio of 170.

Question 4: In a peer-to-peer (P2P) network, Internet users that are ready to share their resources become peers and form a network. Describe the differences between centralised and decentralised P2P networks? Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both networks.

Question 5: What is the total delay (latency) for a frame of size 5 million bits that is being sent on a link with 12 routers each having a queuing time of 4 µs and a processing time of 2 µs. The length of the link is 2600 km, the speed of light inside the link is 2.2 x 10 m/s, the link has a bandwidth of 6 8 Mbps. Which component(s) of the total delay is/are dominant? Which one(s) is/are negligible?

Question 6: Briefly explain the working of FTP with a flow diagram. How does it differ from SCP? What are the security considerations in FTP?

Rationale - This assessment consists of six questions assessing a basic understanding of network & data communication models, next generation IP and application layer paradigm. This assessment covers the following learning objectives:

  • define and explain various Internet technologies;
  • describe and analyse the role and importance of Internet technologies in the modern world; and
  • explain how different application layer services such as client-server and peer-to-peer

II. Computer organizations and architecture - Assessment item 1 and 4

Assessment item 1

Task

This Assessment item has four parts. Please note the deadlines of the four parts of this assessment item:

Assessment item 1 part i:

Using Interact2 Blog tool, please engage yourself in the peer learning and teaching activities with your fellow classmates by posting at least one question on Topic 1. Your questions may be related to different terminologies related to the history of computing, or measuring units used in computing technologies, or historical evolution of computers, or any other related subjects covered in Topic 1. You also need to answer at least one question or post comments on a question/answer posted by the other students. You can also rate other questions and answers posted by your classmates or the lecturer. This assessment part will be used to identify students at risk.

Assessment item 1 part ii:

Using Interact2 Blog tool, please engage yourself in the peer learning and teaching activities with your fellow classmates by posting at least one question on Topic 2. Your questions may be related to different terminologies related to numerical systems of computing technologies, or different representation techniques used in computing systems, or calculation methods of different data representation methods, or any other related subjects to Topic 2.You also need to answer at least one question from the questions posted by the other students. You may also rate other questions and answers posted by your classmates or the lecturer. This assessment part will be used to identify students at risk.

Assessment item 1 part iii:

Using Interact2 Blog tool, please engage yourself in the peer learning and teaching activities with your fellow classmates by posting at least one question on Topic 3. Your questions may be related to different terminologies related to digital logic and Boolean algebra, or design and interpreting complex digital circuits, or Boolean algebraic problems, or any other related subjects to Topic 3. You also need to answer at least one question from the questions posted by the other students or put few comments on questions and answers posted by other students. You may also rate other questions and answers posted by your classmates or the lecturer.

Assessment item 1 part iv:

Using the Interact2 Blog tool, please engage yourself in the peer learning and teaching activities with your fellow classmates by posting a topic in the trends in computing technology or writing critiques on the guest lecturer's speech or blog posted by other students. Your Blog topic should be clearly identified your investigation and evaluation of the related trends of computing technology. You should also demonstrate your ability to communicate with others, in the discussion of future trends in computing technology, by commenting on other blogs posted on this topic submitted by other students.

Your blog entry should be at least 200 words and each comment should be at least 50 words.

Rationale

This assessment task covers Topic 1, 2, 3 and 9. The assessment task is designed to ensure that you are engaging with the subject content on a regular basis. More specifically it seeks to assess your ability to:

  • be able to demonstrate and appropriately use computer organisation and architecture terminologies;
  • be able to apply an understanding of data representations and calculations to practical situations;
  • be able to apply Boolean algebra and digital logic to design and interpret complex digital circuits;
  • be able to investigate, evaluate and communicate general trends in computing technologies including examples of leading edge developments.

Assessment item 4 -

Task

1. A digital computer has a memory unit with 48 bits per word. The instruction set consists of 240 different operations. All instructions have an operation code part (opcode) and an address part (allowing for only one address). Each instruction is stored in one word of memory.

a) How many bits are needed for the opcode?

b) How many bits are needed to specify the register?

c) How many bits are left for the address part of the instruction?

d) What is the maximum allowable size for memory?

e) What is the largest unsigned binary number that can be accommodated in one word of memory?

2. Write a MARIE program using a loop that multiplies two non-negative numbers by using repeated addition. For example, to multiply 3 x 6, the program would add 3 six times (e.g. 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3) or add 6 three times (e.g. 6 + 6 + 6). You should write and run the program using MARIE simulator. Also write the code with Address, Instruction, and Comments.

3. Consider an instruction Add 1000. Memory contents, Accumulator (AC), and R1 Register contents are depicted in the below figure: (such as memory address 1000 contains a value 1400, memory address 1100 contains a value 400 etc. All the numbers used here are decimals).

Assuming R1 is implied in the indexed addressing mode, determine the actual value loaded into the accumulator (AC) using the following addressing modes:

i) Immediate

ii) Direct

iii) Indirect

iv) Indexed

Rationale

This assessment task covers topics on CPU operation and Instruction Set Architecture, and has been designed to ensure that you are engaging with the subject content on a regular basis. More specifically it seeks to assess your ability to:

  • be able to define and appropriately use computer systems terminologies;
  • be able to describe the essential elements of computer organisation and discuss how the elements function;
  • be able to describe the basic instruction set architecture of a simple computer;
  • be able to discuss the general trends in computing technologies including examples of leading edge developments.
