Dissolved solids in the tar from the bottom of a distillation column are precipitated by quenching the hot tar in oil. The solids are then separated from the oil and burnt. The density of the solids is 1100 kg/m3 . The density of the liquid phase after addition of the tar is 860 kg/m3 and its viscosity, at the temperature of the mixture, is 1.7 mN m-2 s. The solid content of the oil and tar mixture is 10% and the flow rate of the liquid phase leaving the separator will be 1000 kg/h. The cutoff particle size required is 0.1 mm.
