DESIGN, DRAWING AND PRACTICAL SKILLS Design, Build and Test Project Brief "Prototype Electric Freight Train"

Introduction

Due to the outcome of research, economic factors and government legislation, performance of machinery and transportation is increasingly required to perform in power efficient ways. For this project, you will be given a list of available components and required to design, develop and build a prototype electrically powered rail vehicle to transport a load a set distance. The resulting 'device' will be tested and compared against the efforts of other groups.

You will complete this task working as part of a team of six students. You are urged to pay careful attention to the rest of the information contained in this brief and delivered via the technical bulletins during the lecture slots. Failure to meet the requirements and comply with the constraints will negatively affect your mark.

The Task

Your electric rail vehicle must carry as much ballast as possible to a maximum load of 1kg. 1kg of ballast will occupy a volume of 800cm3. The load must be transported as quickly as possible in a straight line for a distance of 5m. The performance of your device will be measured by noting the speed at which this task is completed, the amount of load carried and also the amount of energy used.

Report 1 - Project Planning

I. A design specification for the cart.

II. A project plan to include a timing plan and any specific responsibilities of team members.

Presentation - Conceptual designs for the cart.

III. A minimum of three concept designs per group should be presented for the mechanism that will collect current from the overhead power supply. The presentation will consist of hand sketched illustrations explaining how the mechanism will operate. The sketches should use orthographic projection and a 3 dimensional projection and these should be presented using a PowerPoint presentation on the projector screen.

Report 2 - Design

IV. Selection of the design as detailed in report 1 should be taken forward and used in the final design. It should be noted that this is the conductor system and not the cart. This exercise should make use of the Weighted Objectives Method. The objectives used and the scores awarded should be clearly rationalised.

Please note. This is the full weighted objectives method and not the simplified method.

V. A set of working drawings for each component and an assembly drawing of the prototype, including where appropriate sectional and detailed views which show how the assembly fits together. This should include a parts list in which all components and the number used must be listed and specified. Any additional parts required should be clearly identified with full details provided.

VI. Schematic of the electrical circuit and details of the mechanical transmission system and a full explanation of how it will function. All design choices should be explained and relevant design calculations included.

Report 3 - Refinement, testing and improvement

VII. Test results of the mechanical, electrical performance.

VIII. Conclusion including suggestions of modifications to improve the performance of the prototype and proposed strategy for the competition in terms of load to be carried.

Competition

IX. Final performance of the prototype in the test.

X. Construction of the prototype in accordance with the specification, your embodiment design and your detail drawings.
