Creating an Optimization Model

• You will start working on this project.
• You may want to print this page for future reference.

For the Unit 2 group project, you will work with one other student to create and use an optimization model (preferably linear) of an engineering design. We will be using the information you learned in Unit 1 to make this model. Your model should have 5 to 10 decision variables. (More or fewer variables are acceptable, but be sure to explain why in your proposal.)

1. Begin by finding the partner assigned to you by your instructor. Then, together, the two of you will determine an engineering design to study.

2. Begin working with your partner on the proposal. The proposal is just a one-page summary of what you plan to do. The proposal should contain a brief description of the process/design and the decision variables, explain why such a program would be beneficial to the user, and describe a few scenarios to which you will apply the program. After discussing each of these components with your partner, work together to write the proposal. Each of you might write all or parts of it, then review each other's writing, make suggestions and changes, and do a final draft. List both group member names on the proposal and have one group member submit it for comments and review from the instructor.

3. After submitting your proposal, divide up the work and do it. You have until the end of the unit to do all the work, but remember that you will need time enough before the end to write a substantial final report--and that bringing the needed level of polish to such a report is extremely important. You will need to do at least two drafts of the report, with time to review and rewrite between drafts.

4. The final report should expand upon the introduction and background given in the proposal. Make sure the development of the model is clearly explained. Results from the model (graphs of results from multiple program runs) are also very important, but the most important section will be your discussion. Your discussion should explore the quality of the program and its usefulness. Keep in touch with your partner to make sure that you submit your report in good form and on time.

5. Be sure to list both your names when you submit the final report.

Suggested length for the final report is 10 to 15 pages.
