Case Study - Tasty Food Caterers

Tasty Food Caterers (TFC) is a small catering firm with five employees. During a typical summer weekend, TFC caters 30 functions with 50 to 150 people each. The business has grown rapidly over the past year, and the owner wants to install a new computer system for managing the ordering and buying process. TFC has a set of 10 standard menus.

Customers contact the TFC reception to get details of menus. When potential customers call, the receptionist describes the menus to them. If the customer decides to book the catering, the receptionist records the customer information (e.g., name, address, phone number, etc.) and the information about the picnic (e.g., place, date, time, which one of the standard menus, total price) on a contract. The customer is then faxed a copy of the contract and must sign and return it along with a deposit (often by credit card or check) before the catering is officially booked. The remaining money is collected when customer comes to collect the food.

Sometimes, the customer wants something special (e.g., birthday cake). In this case, the receptionist takes the information and gives it to the owner who determines the cost; the receptionist then calls the customer back with the price information. Sometimes the customer accepts the price; other times, the customer requests some changes, which have to go back to the owner for a new cost estimate.

The chefs in the kitchen should be able to see the orders daily and what is due to prepare. The support staff should be able to wrap the orders and should mark as orders are completed.

Each week, the owner looks through the catering scheduled for that weekend and orders the supplies (e.g., plates) and food (e.g. Bread, chicken) needed to make them.

The owner would like to use the system for marketing as well. It should be able to track how customers learned about TFC and identify repeat customers so that TFC can mail special offers to them. The owner also wants to track the catering on which TFC sent a contract, but the customer never signed the contract or actually booked a catering.

Section A

Read the case study of Tasty Food Caterers (TFC). Suppose that you are allocated to do the system design for the TFC. Explain/Illustrate how do you explain following situations/Questions.
1. What Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) would you suggest to follow in developing the computer system for TFC? Why?
2. What is the best method to gather requirements to develop this computer System? Why? Justify your answer.
3. Develop a sample questionnaire to gather requirements to develop the system. Explain which method you use to arrange the questions (e.g. Pyramid, Funnel, Diamond). (Note- Questionnaire should have at least 15 questions with open and closed ended.)
4. Identify Functional requirements and non-functional requirements for the proposed system for TFC. Create Two lists.

Section B

5. Draw the Use Case diagram for the proposed system of TFC.
6. Write Use Case scenarios for all the Use cases. Use the simplified template form the slides.
7. Draw the Entity Relationship Diagram. Clearly indicate entities, attributes, relationships and cardinalities.
8. Draw Data Flow diagram - Context Diagram depicting the external entities and data flow to the system
9. Select FOUR functions and develop interfaces for selected for functions. You can draw them using pencils and scan to the final document.
10. Perform Cost Benefit Analysis for the proposed system. Use the spread sheet provided.
11. Identify classes should exists in the proposed systems and develop a class diagram for the proposed system of TFC.

Section C - What you should do

You should provide a single report with following headings. The document should be added with diagrams and text answering the questions in the section A using the case study for TFC. Rules
- The assignment could be done in a group of TWO members.
- Any assumptions / business rules should be clearly documented with your answer.
- All the diagrams and text should be combined and created a one PDF file for submission
- Strictly follow the guidelines for the report. The report should be readable and figures should be cleared.
- All the figures named and numbered. They should be cited in the document. (e.g. In
Figure 1 the use case is shown and there are 5 Use Cases we have identified as ...)
- The report should have a cover page with student name lecturer names and at least following headings
o Introduction
- It clearly defines the aims of the report , problems and identifies the project objectives.
o Functional and Non - Functional Requirements - Questionnaire and related information
o Design
o Cost Benefits Analysis
o Conclusion
- Summary of your findings
